Durham University has a long and distinguished history of delivering high quality research and teaching across the broad discipline of engineering. It was the first UK university to run an engineering degree programme, in 1838. The Department of Engineering offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses which produce modern engineers who are capable of solving problems across the traditional engineering boundaries. Our aim is to give the best education possible, providing an encouraging, supportive and intellectually challenging environment where students can develop their skills and enhance their employability. Our academic staff are all actively engaged in research at the frontiers of modern engineering analysis, design and practice.
Their passion and knowledge is brought into all courses, where students are exposed to, and involved in, cutting-edge research that goes on within the Department. However, we recognize that the engineering profession is still very much gender imbalanced and are working on a number of initiatives to improve gender diversity. Our Education Partnership with WES provides an exciting opportunity to collaborate on these initiatives, as well as supporting our women engineers through the various networking opportunities that are on offer.
