A vibrant engineering school with 1000+ staff and students, our approach to teaching prioritises the application of Engineering to solving real-world industry related problems and providing wider societal benefits.
The School’s rich gender and ethnic diversity was recognised in the award of Silver Athena SWAN charter status in 2019.
With above sector average female representation across the School (with 50% and 30% female representation across 2 of our undergraduate programmes) and also across research teams, we have much to celebrate. Yet, we view the Silver AS, not as a destination but as a spring-board, ever-mindful of the need to nurture and grow that diversity to help deliver our vision of engineering for the future.
Our strength is in providing students with the skills required to develop new technologies and meet the challenges of the future, in an inclusive environment. By promoting diversity across everything we do we inspire those around us to ‘get ready to make a difference’.
We are proud to have established the first WES-inspired staff and student hub in Northern Ireland.
Actively building on a number of initiatives within the School which were recognised as good practice (e.g. our ‘buddy system’ for new staff members), the establishment of a WES-inspired Hub provided the ideal framework within which we could develop and grow that good practice to extend it more widely to our students and early career researchers. For us, as with WES, it’s about building a sense of community.
Building on the #IfSheCanSeeItSheCanBeIt theme, we marked our WES education partnership during the WES Centenary Year with the launch of a new permanent exhibition of inspirational STEM role models on-campus.
