Womens Engineering Society: Inspiring women as engineers, scientists and technical leaders

Sponsorship of the award

Sponsorship: Could you or your company help?

Initially the financial support for these awards came largely from industry. However, in the increasingly market-driven climate, fewer and fewer companies are prepared to offer financial support and it has become more and more difficult to raise sufficient fund to give adequate help to the numbers of deserving cases applying each year.

Since 1991 over fifty young women have benefited from the award scheme.
Recent sponsors have included Hydratight Sweeney, Arup and Hewlett
Packard and the awards are supported by The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET).

We urgently need further funding, either as one-off donations or, preferably, in the form of recurrent contributions over a period of several years, of an amount sufficient to support one or more awards of £1000 per year. This sum is the current ideal award in order to make a significant impact on most candidates' circumstances, although in recent years we have been reduced to making much smaller awards. Repeat funding from year to year for an individual awardee is a desirable situation, which can only rarely be provided; alternatively commitment of a regular sum every year for a number of years would allow WES to make new awards each year. Additional benefits that companies could provide include sandwich year or summer work placements for the award holders.

WES is happy to give donor companies or individuals publicity if they wish, including by the attachment of their name to specific awards. The presentation of the awards is given publicity in the WES journal, the WES website and relevant University newsletters and, wherever possible, through company and engineering institutions' journals or local media.

If your company may be able to contribute to the awards, please contact Carol Marsh, Lady Finniston Fund Manager, c/o the WES office.
