Judith Hackitt, CBE

Biography

Judith was first in appointed in 1 October 2007 for a term of 5 years and was reappointed as Chair of HSE for a further 3 years from October 2012. She previously served as a Commissioner between 2002 and 2005 and was awarded her CBE for services to health and safety.

Judith began her working career in 1975 with Exxon Chemicals where she spent 15 years in various process management roles. She was subsequently European Operations Director of a speciality pigments business before becoming Group Risk Manager with worldwide responsibility for health and safety, insurance and litigation.  She then moved to the Chemical Industries Association where she became Director General (from 2002-2005) and then worked in Brussels for the European Chemical Industry Association (CEFIC).

Judith trained as a Chemical Engineer at Imperial College, London and is a Fellow of the Institution of Chemical Engineers and a member of council.  She will become President of IChemE in May 2013.  She was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in July 2010.

Judith is senior non-executive director of the Energy Saving Trust and was previously a non-executive director of Oxfordshire Health Authority.

She is not engaged in any political activity.
